Yamaha Enticer 250: bogey wheel sitting on the track edge
Bogey wheels are the small idler wheels in a snowmobile's rear suspension that hold the track against the slide rails. They are supposed to run in the flat lanes between the track's drive lugs. One of these is not.
The question
The belts keep walking: does the bogey-wheel alignment measure out of spec, the way the wear pattern says it should?
Two jobs are done. The drive belt is replaced. The front ski is repaired: wear bar, ski, and the hardware tying the spindle into the steering, all back to square.
Neither of them is the interesting one. A drive belt that wears out is a belt; a drive belt that keeps wearing out is a geometry problem wearing a belt's clothes. One of the rear bogey wheels has been riding on the inside edge of the track rather than square in the lug pattern, and the wear is on the edge where it rides.
Why the loud jobs went first
Because they keep the machine moveable and they cost nothing to be wrong about. The belt and the ski are what the sled complains about; the bogey is the silent one. Doing the noisy ones first meant the quiet diagnosis could wait without keeping the machine off the snow, and it also gives the alignment measurement something to be compared against: a fresh belt that starts wearing on the same edge is the confirmation.
What the fix is not
It is not a part. Nothing on the machine has failed in a way that a new component answers. It is pulling the rear suspension, measuring wheel alignment against the track, and resetting the one that is out, which is the sort of job where ordering something first is the mistake.
What it does not settle
Nothing has been measured. The wear pattern is consistent with an alignment problem and it is also consistent with a bent axle, a tired suspension bushing or a track that has stretched unevenly. The measurement decides which.
- Where it stands
- Belt and ski are done. The bogey wheel that chewed them still rides the inside edge of the track.
- Next
- Pull the rear suspension, measure wheel alignment against the track, and reset the offending bogey before another belt walks.
